The discoveries in quantum mechanics and many other areas made by physicists last century led to reliable, fast electrical switches. Because switches can be used to automate calculations, this created a feedback loop where faster calculations allowed faster calculators to be produced: so called "integrated circuits". Integrated circuits have obviously profoundly transformed our lives by allowing us to produce electronic devices. Each one, on a few square millimetres, is more complex than a street map of the world - nevertheless they are mass produced in factories.
